Steps 3 and 4 have already focused on two elements of training:
Training needs assessment: to identify the gaps between current and future knowledge, skills, and competencies and the type of learning that is needed to fill these gaps
Training strategy: identifies the factors necessary for training to be successful and outlines a training approach
Step six focuses on defining learning content and developing training materials to ensure stakeholders can perform their role. The process should ensure content and material mees stakeholder expectations and adheres to applicable standards. It helps to:
Ensure each in-scope stakeholder is provided with the right training content(s) that is specific to their job role (or function)
Minimise organisation disruption and maximise the programme/project benefits by effectively providing customised training to end-users.
The training should address the skills and knowledge gaps identified during the CIA and training needs assessment and be in line with the agreed training strategy.
6.3.1. Training design and development – the process
1. Develop training course design
Create design principles for the training schedule, delivery, methods, and tools. Use the training strategy and plan and the training delivery method guide in the playbook as a guide
Gather and integrate relevant information to develop training course design.
2. Develop training material, feedback and assessment mechanisms
Develop a detailed training course outline for each course to include:
What will be covered in each course
Method and timings
Review the training outline and scope with key stakeholders:
Finalise detailed course outline for sign-off from the MDA
Detail course overview, objectives, and target audience
Start the development of the training materials
Design and develop the training feedback and assessment mechanisms to be used in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the training courses
Amend and finalise detailed course for sign-off from MDA including the course overview, objectives, and target audience.
3. Review and refine training materials
Conduct peer review sessions to walk through early course development to ensure consistency across the development team if necessary
Review and assess training material against original training design
If a system change, compare training content to the latest version of the system (to ensure that click-throughs and screenshots are accurate)
Refine content based on feedback.
3. Validate and produce training materials
Review training material with subject matter resources and key stakeholders to ensure content accuracy
Gain interim content sign-off with key stakeholders that the training is ready for piloting
Test the training content with trainers or end users to check usability of material
Produce/reproduce training materials once finalised.
