Chapter 5 – Benefits realisation

5.2. Benefits realisation (BR)

The effective management of change typically drives three key benefits:

  • Faster speed of adoption
  • Increased practice of new behaviours
  • Higher levels of competence in the new ways of working.

The diagram describes the typical reasons why benefits are not realised.

Benefits realisation (BR) tracks the achievement of intended benefits (tangible and intangible) following the implementation or completion of a project and helps to resolve the challenges by:

  • Identifying benefits that are real and measurable
  • Ensuring that benefits are owned by the MDA
  • Managing benefits delivery alongside the programme or project
  • Tracking and measuring benefits through to realisation
  • Driving adoption by demonstrably impacting the elements that will drive benefits.

5.2.1. Benefits realisation – the process

1. Identify benefits, MDA owners and KPIs Add Your Heading Text Here

  1. Identify target benefits and key performance indicators (KPIs) to inform and prioritise decisions and delivery strategy
  2. Assess the programme change landscape, ensuring barriers to change are identified, investigated, and removed
  3. Develop benefit profile and benefit charters
  4. Identify benefit and KPI owners accountable for sustainable benefits realisation.

2. Identify benefits, MDA owners and KPIs

  1. Assess current capability and identify gaps to be bridged in order to drive benefits realisation
  2. Develop benefits realisation plan along with the project team and key stakeholders
  3. Establish benefits management governance, using existing forums and structures, where appropriate
  4. Measure and monitor progress on an on-going basis and communicate progress

3. Sustainable benefits realisation

  1. Establish a meeting cadence (monthly| quarterly| bi-annually etc.), to monitor and assess benefits realisation and to identify and resolve risks
  2. Launch benefits realisation governance, including monitoring, tracking, reporting and risk and issue escalation
  3. Create continuous improvement processes so benefits and KPIs can be maintained as “living” documents. This will enable the benefits realisation management processes to be tailored to changing constraints and priorities.
